Martian scarp. False-colour satellite image of a scarp (steep cliff) at the head of Chasma Boreale. Chasma Boreale is a deep canyon that cuts into the raised piece of land known as Planum Boreum (yellow, top) in Mars' north polar region. Mineral layers are seen in the exposed scarp rock, which can give insight into the planet's climate history. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).
