Ear wax removal. Man having his ear syringed at a doctor's surgery. This procedure is used to remove wax from the external auditory meatus, the passage from the outer ear to the eardrum. Wax build-up in the ear is a common cause of deafness. To remove the wax a solution is introduced into the passage from the syringe to soften the wax. Warm olive oil or sodium bicarbonate solution may be used. The wax is then flushed away with warm water.
