The head also is malformed, the eyeballs are absent, the cere- bral hemispheres are exposed and the upper bill absent; in the latter condition it resembles that of chick number 7. 10. This specimen is of a kitten at full term and presents four hind legs and a malformation of left eye and submaxillary region (Fig. 8). In the gross specimen the duplication of the caudal portion of the body starts in the lumbar region. Both parts are equally devel- oped, both sets of pelvic limbs and both tails are apparently large. The anal orifice and genitalia seem normal. Upon dissection the duplication starts at the se- cond lumbar vertebra. The first lumbar vertebra is single, but larger than usual with a single almost fl-shaped spinous process. The other six vertebrae in each set diverge from each other at an angle of about 60° and pre- sent nothing unusual. Upon opening the thoracic and abdominal cavities, the fol- lowing is observed: one heart, one pair of lungs in the thoracic cavity. In the abdominal cavity there are one spleen, one sto- mach, one small intestine and one pancreas. The ileum ends between two ceca, each of which continues as colon and rectum to its respective anal orifice. No ascending and transverse colons as such could be distinguished. There is but one pair of kid- neys, one for each body. There are two bladders, each of which receives the ureter from the kidney of its side. There is but one ovary, uterine tube and vagina in each body. The head presents two anterior nares but no oral aperture. The submaxillary region is hairy, but at the junction of the region with the neck proper, a small smooth, bifurcated teat-like process 'is seen. Fig. 10. Calf's head showing partial duplication.
