Kindly advise me how to keep celery in a trench. How deep and wide should the trench be and how close should I put the celery in it? What would you cover it with? I wish to keep it until about Christmas. The variety I grow is White Plume. D. G. The best way to keep celery in trenches outdoors is to grow the plants in trenches dug out ten inches deep and of sufficient width to accommodate a double row. The plants can go ten inches apart and the rows should be twelve to fifteen inches apart. It is then a simple matter to hill up gradu- ally with soil and protect them. As you have probably been growing your plants in single rows, dig out a trench eighteen inches deep and a yard wide on any well-drained land. Lift with a good ball and pack close together. Every four or five feet put in a board partition. This prevents heating and the spreading of mold. Cover with soil as you proceed, except the tops of the plants; these can be covered later. When all are covered, let the ground freeze two or three inches thick be- fore putting on a coating of straw, leaves or some other mulch. A couple of wide boards, nailed V-shape, can be used on the top of the trench to throw oflf the water. An easier way to keep celery would be either in a coldframe or cellar, pack- ing the roots in sand and airing freely.
