Avro Lancaster Bomber. A four engine heavy bomber which first saw active service in 1942 with RAF Bomber Command. It was the main aircraft in the night time bombing campaigns overshadowing the the Handley Page Halifax and the Short Stirling. It was the most famous and successful night time bomber of the Second World War. The “Lanc” was designed by Roy Chadwick. It was powered by 4 Rolls Royce Merlin engines although one version had Bristol Hercules engines. It could carry huge bombs upto 1200 pounds and also the 22000 pound Grand Slam earthquake bombs ( designed by Barnes Wallis) and was also the aeroplane that delivered the “bouncing bomb” (also designed by Barnes Wallis) to the dams in the Ruhr Valley.
