Bungalow, with red garden bush, grass and small boat suspended above the river bank, Sarmiento River, Parana Delta, Buenos Aires

The Parana River Delta, flowing into the River Plate north of Buenos Aires, is popular with wealthier portenos as a weekend and summer getaway from the city. Tour boats access the delta via the River Tigre, which runs through the town of Tigre on the south side of the delta. Transport by boat is the main way of travelling in the delta for both residents and tourists. The River Tigre flows into the larger River Lujan, which, in turn, gives access to the well visited Sarmiento River. All are a few of the many distributaries making up the delta. Camp-sites, restaurants and attractive houses (on stilts as a protection against flood levels) feature in a tour of the Sarmiento River. River banks in front of homes are strengthened with wood and metal piles to protect them from river erosion.
