Second World War docklands fire, London's East End. Fire burning in London's Docklands on 7 September 1940, following the first bombing raid by German airplanes in the Second World War (1939-1945). Tower Bridge is at lower right. The most intense period of bombardment, known as the Blitz, took place from September 1940 to May 1941. The docks area on the Thames in East London was particularly targeted by the bombers. In London, over 20,000 civilians were killed, and over a million houses destroyed.
