View across the valley in which the ancient city of Eleftherna in Crete stood.


The necropolis is in and around the roofed shelter on the left, the acropolis was near the tower on the skyline centre-right and the excavation of the main city is below that, concealed by the lay of the land. Eleftherna has become a multi-million euro dig for Greek archaeologists, but unlike Knossos and despite the investment of public funds, plans to open it for visitors have been stalled for years.
