. 1979 Research accomplishments : forests for our needs. Forests and forestry Research United States. Products and Engineering. New Products from Veneer Upholstered furniture frames are currently produced from mixed hardwood lumber. Many manufacturers report difficulty in obtaining adequate quantities of long and/or wide parts from low-grade lumber. Since the frame is covered by upholstery, appearance is not a factor. Purdue University and Forest Products Laboratory researchers have conducted a study that shows the feasibility of producing such lumber for furniture frames from parallel-laminated, thick-rotary-cut veneer. The primary advantages of producing lumber by this process are increased yield over conventional sawing, more uniform strength and stiffness than lumber sawn from a comparable quality of logs, and product dimensions not limited by log dimensions. The University of Washington and the Forest Products Laboratory have studied the use of reconstituted materials such as parallel-laminated veneer, which offers the opportunity to use lower grade, little used, and/or smaller raw materials for the manufacture of engineered wood components or finished products. A number of potential market areas have been identified for this type of material and include ladder rails, mobile home ridge beams, purlins, crossarms, joists, glulam beams, and mobile home truss Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original United States.
