WILLIAM AMASA COPP, Lawyer, was bornin North Oxford, Massachusetts, Novem-ber 30, 1843, son of Andrew James and HarrietAnna (Eddy) Copp. He is eighth in direct de-scent from William Copp. who came to Boston in the barque Blessing in 1635 ; and on the mothersside he is descended from John Eddy, son of aVicar of the Church of England, who came toPlymouth in 1630. William A. Copp attended inyouth the High School at Grafton, Massachusetts,and on the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted inthe Fifty-first Massachusetts Volunteers, serving withdistinction. He was fitted for College at the Phil-lips-.^ndover Academy, and graduated from Department of Yale with the degree ofBachelor of Arts in 1869. While in .College hewon honors as a debater, and also pulled on the. WiM. A. COPP Varsity crew every year that he was in College, asstroke in 1867, and was Commodore of the YaleNavy in his Senior year. After studying law atColumbia and a short clerkship in the office ofSlosson, Hutchins & Piatt, he began the practice ofhis profession in New York City, which he has sincecontinued with marked success. He is a Republi-can in politics, and has served as a delegate to vari-ous conventions of the party; is a Trustee of theGrant Monument Association; and was Treasurerof the Yale .?\lumni Association from 1889 to 1898,with the exception of 1890, during which year heserved as its Vice-President.
