Open pit copper mine, Ray Mine, ASARCO Grupo Mexico, Ray Operations, Pinal County, Kearny, Arizona.

The Ray Mine, owned by ASARCO Grupo Mexico, Ray Operations, Pinal County, Kearny, Arizona, is located about 15 miles from Superior, Arizona, which is near the Oak Flat Campground. The campground is the seen of occupation by San Carlos Apache Native Americans in protest of new mining in the area. Last year, Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake attached a land swap measure to a defense bill in which ownership of 2,400 acres of Apache sacred land was transferred to Resolution Copper. The company plans to mine potentially the largest source of copper production in North America. The $64 billion excavation project would unfold over 60 years and is expected to leave a pit 7,000 feet deep and two miles wide, and a 7,000 acre waste dump for tailings 500 feet high. Resolution Copper is a Rio Tinto company, which is headquartered in the UK.
