Blue sky evening twilight view across beach with frost and sea ice, south to Outer Promenade and RNLI Centre, St Annes, Lancashire, UK, December 2010

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature in the UK was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first cold spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick.
