Tropical plants, 19th-century artwork. From left to right these are: a coconut palm (Cocos nucifera); a yucca plant (Yucca aloifolia); a banana plant (Musa sp.); a cactus plant; a fan palm; and a castor oil plant (Ricinus communis). The term 'cocoa nut' is an archaic term for coconut. 'Cereus' is a general term used for columnar cacti. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana', an encyclopedia published in London between 1817 and 1845. Thirty volumes were issued in 59 parts, with 22,426 pages and 565 plates. This plate is dated 1833.
