Merchants of the Staple (The Company of Merchants of the Staple of England or Merchant Staplers) - A 1525 drawing of Calais, the Staple Town between 1363 to 1558. It was the oldest mercantile corporation in England) dealing in wool, skins, lead and tin which controlled the export of wool to the continent during the late medieval period. The Staple was a closed or fixed market, but probably originated a term for a market commodity ( staple diet). It was first fixed at Antwerp then Saint-Omer, Bruges, Brussels, Louvain, Mechelen , Calais; and in 1353 at Staple Inn, Holborn, London.
