G 13 Average height of shoots, Various authors might here object that what caus?s the depression ill all these cases there is merely the nndne excess of a carbonate and not an unfavourable ratio of lime to magnesia. But- that such an opinion is erroneous follows from many experiments made thus far at this college. A further proof that the depression by the large dose of CaCOg is noj duo t<;) this lariic amount in itself, is furnished by the fact that an CaO addition of so much pulverised magnesitc that the ratio -j^j q 7i. IS produced, lias again a favoirihle effect^ as an experiment with buckwhcaL ha<l demonstrated. The manure for each pot of kilo sand was the same as abovo mcntionedj and both the pots received 5G g. CaCO^; but one of the pots only 0,6 g. magnesitc while the other GO g. The result was that in the latter case the buckwheat plants showed after 3 weeks with the ratio ^'^"'/loo the same height (20 cm.) as the buckwheat plants had shown at ^/i Avliile at ^'"^/i the plants bad reached only cm. Hence the ratio ^"^"'/loo "^^''1=5 i'^i' superior to the ratio ^'"'^/i- This experiment further shows that buckwheat is not injured by an excess of carbonate of lime in itself, which agrees very well with a furmer observation â ''In ;i iornier experiment with rice only unc shoot was produced when the lime amount was increased to thirty times of that of magnesia and the ripening process was much retarded, phenomena also observed by ^Ir. Kumakiri (these Bui. VII., Xo. 1.) at an e.\cess of Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page im
