A portrait of British Parliamentarian John Hampden 1594 – 1643 .He was a rebel who challenged the authority of King Charles I and refused to be taxed for ship money which made him a national hero for many. His attempted unconstitutional arrest (with four others) by the king in the house of commons in 1642 prompted the English Civil War. He died at the Battle of Chalgrove Field in that war
