SYMBOLS - OCCULT ART - ROSICRUCIANS - SEPARATION One of a series of influential occult engravings by William Law, in explication of the principles in the arcane thought of the Rosicrucian, Jacob Boehme, from The Works of Jacob Behmen, The Teutonic Theosopher, Vol 1, 1764. Plate 12, which illustrates the extraordinary moment when Christ (named by Boehme, 'the Breaker') stands open the Gate, that the children of the first Adam might follow him into Paradise, 'which could not be done by any Soul before that Time'. Within a circular band, which contains 9 signs of the zodiac (Gemini, Cancer and Leo are hidden behind the superfluity of spiritual stars [Stars of David] representative of the spiritual World), and 18 six-pointed stars. From this circular band, a spiral, carrying the symbols for the planets, curves inwards, to merge with a blazing Sun. The entire image displays two might arcs, the top one of which represents the Trinity, and the flames that symbolize the spiritual hierarchies, contrasted with the lower arc, which is essentially one of darkness, the realm of Saturn (now unnamed). Within this darkness, the A and the earth globe (still the opening planet on the spiral) are united, to reveal the Earth between two columns, and the upper triangle of the letter A, in a delta form, also a triangle, echoing the larger triangle of the spiritual world. The separation of the Spiritual from the Material, is effected only by the burning Sun. Although the essential theme of this engraving is separation, and polarities of dark and light, the implication is that these will be resolved.
