Auschwitz Camp POW Barracks.

Most of the barracks in camp II are just remains, the bases remain and remnants of the brick chimneys still barely stand in the wind. Everything else has practically rotted away yet most of the chimneys still stand. These specific wooden barracks were originally designed to hold horses and not POW's. However the overcrowding in camp I a mile down the road forced the Nazi's to think big; and didn't they just. POW's had to sleep on hard wooden bunk beds, each bunk would house 5-6 POW's in some cases more. There were 36 bunks per barrack, in total there were/are 90 wooden barracks in camp II. Very few had windows, and those that did rarely opened, the floors were not concrete but compact mud or rock. When you calculate the numbers you then realise just how poor living conditions were, how disease spread fast, and how people died so quickly, well, those that were picked to work. The barracks had no insulation from the cold or heat, the wooden roofs often leaked, and the straw sometimes supplied as bedding was soon filthy and wet. The only toilet facility was a single bucket, and diarrhoea, lice, and disease were common.
