The Labra-dor coast is steep, rising to flat-topped ridges and summitsfrom one thousand to thirteen hundred feet high. Severalof the bays and inlets are large, with bold shores and verydeep water. Dense fogs prevail in the strait during summer, andsometimes last for several days at a time. In Septemberstrong northerly or northwesterly winds with clear weatherare more likely to occur. The ordinary rates of the streams are from one to twoknots an hour, but in certain localities, as off Amour andForteau Points, the streams are stronger and may attain arate of from four to five knots close to the shore.
