The former inn was converted into an elegant town house for the Hageloch family in 1608-9, with its late Gothic facade frescoed with a golden ox and characters from Babylonian and Greek Antiquity.
Schaffhausen, northern Switzerland: a Renaissance lady with a dog at her feet holds flowers as she stands, dressed in a long gown with puffed sleeves and a lace ruff, between limbless male and female grotesque figures on the elaborate oriel window of the Haus zum Goldenen Ochsen (House of the Golden Ox) at Vorstadt 17 in the Altstadt or old town. The painted and gilded relief decoration was sculpted in 1609, when the property, a former inn or hostel, was converted into an elegant town house for the Hageloch family. The late Gothic facade was remodelled in German Renaissance style with an ornate portal, the prominent oriel window, a pedimented depiction of a golden ox and, between the windows, frescoed figures drawn from Babylonian and Greek Antiquity, including heroes of the Trojan War. The Haus zum Goldenen Ochsen is among a number of fine Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque guild houses and merchant houses in the old town at Schaffhausen. Many others also feature oriel windows and lavish external frescoes and sculpture. Schaffhausen was a fortified medieval city state that grew around a Benedictine monastery. It was a free city within the Holy Roman Empire from about 1200 AD, but joined the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1501 after buying its freedom from its subsequent owners, the Hapsburgs.
