Pembroke College (formerly Hall) Chapel, Cambridge. Designed by Christopher Wren, built 1663-1665

Pembroke College (formerly Hall) Chapel, Cambridge. Designed by Christopher Wren, built 1663-1665, the first completely classical church or chapel built in England since the days of Inigo Jones. Originally a simple rectangular box, without aisles (the marble columns and separate chancel are later additions); it has high elegantly carved wainscotting and pews arranged in the collegiate fashion, facing each other across the nave, rather than facing the altar. Light floods in from round-headed windows, below a sumptuously ornate plaster ceiling.
