Pooley Bridge, which spanned the River Eamont below Ullswater, had withstood the elements since it was built in 1764, but it was no match for Storm Desmond and was completely destroyed. Photographed on 8th December 2015, as engineers tried to restore communications across the river. The storm set a new British record for rainfall totals in one day with falling in 24 hours.
