A breaching humpback whale. New South Wales, Australia: THESE INCREDIBLE images show a 40-tonne humpback launching out of the water in an incredible breach. One image shows the humpback twirling in mid-air as it breaches the water, all in front of a beautiful sunset. The humpback whale can grow up to 56 feet long and typically covers 9,900 miles a year as it travels through the oceans of the world. Humpback whales are a species of Baleen whale, meaning they don?t have teeth. Instead, they have baleen which helps them to filter feed. Their main source of food is krill or tiny bait fish. These images were captured by wildlife photographer Jodie Lowe (34) off the coast of Port Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, using a Canon 90D camera. ?These images were captured during whale watching tours off Port Macquarie. The whales were displaying a fair bit of surface behaviours such as breaching at the time these photos were taken,? said Jodie. ?Whales breach to help rid themselves of lice, barnacles, or dead skin. It can also be a form of communication as breaching is loud and sound travels a great distance in the water. ?I love looking back at those moments that I?ve captured of the whales and seeing their incredible behaviours I?ve caught on camera. ?Whales and dolphins are naturally inquisitive beings, so they will usually come over and check you out. To have a whale come over to the boat is an amazing and unforgettable experience. ?When I captured these shots of the whales breaching, they were around 330 feet away from the boat, I use a telescopic lens to capture these images. Whales usually won?t breach very close to the boat because they are intelligent and most of the time they will move away to breach. ?I felt very thrilled to capture these images because these are wild animals, and you only get one chance to capture that particular mediadrumimages/JodieLowe
