The screws which control the feeds are furnished withmicrometer readings in thousandths of an inch, and thehandles are always convenient to the Hand of the adjustment of the vertical feed screw nut avoids anypossible chance of back lash in the feed screw. The control mechanism is on the outside of the machineand is readily accessible for all adjustments and oiling. Asafety link on the control lever makes it impossible for theoperator to lose control of the machine, and a safet> lockholds the planer while work is being set up. The elevating gear box located on top o: the arch is. ngement of Dr ng Pulleys and Operating Levers driven by a separate belt, and gear> of wide faces andlarge pitch, that are always in mesh. Shift is made by apositive clutch, the shaft and pulley being the only partsrevolving when not in use. The automatic fx>sitive feed hasan oscillating yoke controlled by movements ,of the camplate of the belt shifter. The feed rack for the cross railis accurately cut from bar steel, and meshes with steel pin-ions of heavy pitch. The ratchet pinion on the rail rod andscrew have knurled caps for feed changes, which are veryconvenient and fjuick in action. .Ml feeds tan be changedfrom fine to coarse without stopping the planer, and may bestopped and reversed instantly. 362 MKCHAXICAL KX(;i\ Vol. 92, No. 6 IlTiorjtLii :iluni nuni pulk}.-^ allow the csca|KMiient of airand causes the belts to adhere, thereby eliniinatiii!; the noiseand .-lippinj:; due to the rapid shifting of belts when runningat hig
