Spruce Tree House Anasazi cliff dwelling, Mesa Verde, Colorado; bins used for grinding corn, nuts and fruit using a mano and metare.

Spruce Tree House Anasazi cliff dwelling, Mesa Verde, Colorado, USA. Grinding bins. Women knelt with heels against back wall (right) and used the mano, or hand stone to grind corn, nuts, berries and roots on the flat stone or metare. As they ground soft sandstone grit wore off the stones and was mixed with the food. This abrasive dust would have ground their teeth down as they ate the food.
