DISEASES OF THE WHITE 3IATTEB OF THE COED. 417 The spinal nerves are usually fouud to present a degeneration whichis greatest at the periphery and most marked in, if not entirely confinedto, the sensory fibers for the skin, muscles, and joints. The trophiccenters for these fibers are in the posterior root-ganglion in part, but itseems probable that there are also superficial peripheral trophic cells. The muscle spindles which undoubtedlyhave a sensory function are constantly found degenerated. By somewriters these nerve-changes are denominated a neuritis, but histologicallythe changes conform to a Wallerian degeneration. The spinal m rue-rooU
