The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild cat of South and Southeast Asia. Since 2016, it is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and also protected under Schedule l of the Wildlife Protection Act. A female fishing cat was found dead on the side of the road in Betai, Nadia. It is a waterlogged area where fish is farmed. A post mortem is being done by the forest department to examine the cause of death. It could be either due to a car hit or retaliation. The fishing cat is the state animal of West Bengal.
