Mature tango dancer, below an umbrella shade, waiting for his female partner, in front of tourists, San Telmo, Buenos Aires

Tango is said to have originated from a mix of African rhythms and Argentine polka music in the second half of the 19th century. It was originally danced in the bars, dance halls and brothels of poorer areas in Buenos Aires by young men in slouch hats, loosely tied neckerchiefs, high-heeled boots and knives tucked casually into their belts. The Argentine tango is danced with the close embrace of tops of bodies and heads touching. This dancer displays the traditional pose of a man waiting for a female partner. The Sunday Market at San Telmo features stalls selling crafts and antiques. Tango dancers entertain the crowds.
