The village street of the village on the island of Hirta, St Kilda archipelago, showing ruined and reconstructed cottages

Prior to its evacuation in 1930 at the request of the inhabitants, the village on Hirta was a lonely, isolated place seldom visited by outsiders. After the evacuation the stone houses fell to ruin. The island is now a property of the National Trust for Scotland and some of the cottages have been restored for use as a museum and as housing for researchers on the island.
