Mr. Gladstone arrayed himself against LordPalmerston in 1857 on the Chinese question, andled against him a motley band of Tories, Radicals^and Peelites, who had nothing in common buttheir hatred of the Prime Minister. Lord Pal-merston was defeated; but he appealed to thecountry and was returned to office stronger thaneven The next year, however, he was beaten onanother measure and resigned office. Lord Derbysucceeded him, and Mr. Gladstone was again asupporter of the government, though not a mem-ber of it. The great India bill, transferring thegovernment of India from the old company to theCrown, was now adopted, and Mr. Gladstone suc-ceeded in getting into it a clause forbidding theuse of Hindoo soldiers outside of their own. In November, 1858, Mr. Gladstone wassent to Corfu by Lord Derby as High Commis-sioner Extraordinary to the Ionian Islands, and afew years later those islands were formally unitedto Greece. At about this time, too, Mr. Gladstonepublished his great work entitled Studies onHomer. In this he argued vigorously thatHomer was an actual personage, that he was theauthor of the works ascribed to him in their en-tirety, and that the events related in the poemswere real and not fabulous. He has been all hislife a careful student and constant reader of thegreat Greek epics. Mr
