The site, while admirably adapted to the pur-pose, was, when chosen, a marshy flat, crossedby low sand ridges, upon which stood occasionalclumps of stunted scrub oaks. Before the gatesof the great fair were opened to the public, theentire area had been transformed into a dream ofbeauty. Marshes had been drained, filled in andsodded; driveways and broad walks constructed;artificial ponds and lagoons dug and embanked,and all the highest skill of the landscape garden-ers art had been called into play to produce.
