The Friends make it the habit of their lives togo up to the house of the Lord at least twice aweek. They care for the education of their children,and in the South, where the public school systemhad been very deficient and general education muchneglected, they had a schoolhouse near every meeting-house. The zealous home guard, anxious forothers to go to the front, were hunting here for con-scripts and endeavoring to secure every man whocould possibly be made to serve the Confederacy. We have the names of twenty-nine of the Friendsgathered by these hunters at different times, from thislittle country church. For one of them a relative senta substitute ; some were assigned to the salt-works;some paid for substitutes to work there ; but sooner orlater twenty-two paid the tax. Much suffering wasexperienced by exposure from lying out and per-secutions of various kinds, before relief could be ob-tained. Much property was taken from William Lowand other Friends, — horses, cattle and provisions,without recompense.
