Sodium reacting with ethanol. Sodium (symbol Na) is a reactive metal of group one of the periodic table. Ethanol (alcohol, C2H5OH) reacts with sodium

Sodium reacting with ethanol. Sodium (symbol Na) is a reactive metal of group one of the periodic table. Ethanol (alcohol, C2H5OH) reacts with sodium to form sodium ethoxide (C2H5ONa), and the reaction liberates hydrogen gas (H2), which is seen bubbling off the sodium. The equation for this reaction is: 2Na + 2C2H5OH ---> 2C2H5ONa + H2
