Doubtless his sense ofloyalty to a work which needed him, and which wasprospering hopefully under his eye and hand, was aleading motive in his conclusion to remain west ofthe Mississippi, even though as a man of Easternbirth and education the proffered opportunity wouldhave been in so many respects congenial. Butbeyond all this, his decision indicated an appreciationof the westward shifting of the preponderance of influ-ence in this country, and of the larger scox)e presentedby a Western State like Iowa to a young educationalleader whose life work is still mostly before him,than could be found in an old New England State.
