Diverticulum of the small intestine. Endoscope view of the inside of a diverticulum in the duodenum, the uppermost and shortest part of the small intestine, and the main site of absorption for minerals. Diverticula are outpouchings caused through weaknesses of the muscle layers in the intestinal wall (mucosa). Duodenal diverticula are usually asymptomatic, though complications, such as pancreatitis, haemorrhage and enterolith formation, can sometimes occur.
