Dog tapeworm. Light micrograph of a group of cysticerci from the dog tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Each spherical cysticercus (red) seen here contains an inverted head (scolex) of the dog tapeworm. The inverted head with hooks is visible as a dark region inside each cysticercus. This stage in the life cycle of Echinococcus granulosus occurs in an intermediate host such as sheep or humans which have eaten dog tapeworm eggs. The cysticerci lodge in the body such as muscle, lung, liver or brain, damaging the tissue. When infected tissue is consumed, by the primary dog host, the tapeworm head everts and attaches to the dog intestine. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size. Magnification: x115 at 4x5inch size.
