Aosta, Valle d’Aosta, Italy: a surviving arch of the Teatro Romano, a 4,000-seat semi-circular theatre that once served citizens of the Ancient Roman settlement of Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, now Aosta, capital of the Valle d’Aosta region in northwest Italy. The theatre was built in the reign of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus Caesar (63 BC - 14 AD). It was submerged under a huddle of medieval buildings which were finally cleared in the 20th century. Augusta Praetoria (modern Aosta) was a settlement of the Salassi conquered by Rome in 25 BC From 24 BC a colony of 3,000 Roman military veterans occupied the city of Augusta Praetoria Salassorum and it became the capital of the province Alpes Graies from 11 BC.
