In many courses, if not most ofthem, the aim is to crowd as much of the bare essentialsof Latin as possible into the smallest amount of time ; thusa literature at best impoverished is bereft of one of themost charming and interesting of the few authors availablefor school use. The agile pupil is made to vault from hiscondensed beginners book into Caesar, from Caesar eitherinto Cicero by way of Vergil, or into Vergil by way ofCicero. But a few weeks spent on the Metamorphoses ofOvid need not be considered an unnecessary digressionfrom the straight path to the desired goal, or in any sentermofovidstorie00ovid
