Creation of an homunculus. Historical satirical illustration by the German illustrator Thomas Theodor Heine (1867-1948), depicting alchemists creating an homunculus. Homunculus is a term used in various fields of study to refer to any representation of a small human being. Popularised in sixteenth century alchemy and nineteenth century fiction, it has historically referred to the creation of a miniature fully formed human (as shown here).
