He made no spe-cific charge whatever for his services while with agreement was that whatever surplus was found,after deducting the salaries of the other two pastors andother expenses, should be his. The greatest amount everpaid him in one year was $3,500. I expressed my regretthere was not more, but he replied: I do not wantmore. George Clement Perkins, United States Senator from California: I liked his sermons; liked his style of delivering them; and always madeit a point to hear Dr. Talmage whenever he spoke. He was, in my opinion,the most eminent Christian minister since Beechers time, and second only tohim. He had a national reputation and drew large audiences in California aselsewhere, being as popular there as he was in the East. In his death the nationhas met a great loss.
