Blue sky view trees overhanging pavement to High School and Economics School Complex Number 1 building, Stawki Street, Warsaw

The High School and Economics School Complex Number 1 building (Zespol Szkol Licealnych i Ekonomicznych Nr 1), centre mid-distance, acted, during Word War 2, as a Jewish hospital. In 1942, Jews were detained here before their deportation to the extermination camp at Treblinka. A memorial plaque, with inscriptions in Polish and Hebrew, reads: 'The school and temporary hospital building served the detention of Jews before deportation to Treblinka.' Imprisoned Jews from Hungary and Greece were releaed from this building by soldiers of the Home Army after a fight with SS troops at the start of the Warsaw Uprising 1 August 1944. Portrait shot across Stawki Street towards the school. The Umschlagplatz Monument, marking the place of deportation to the Treblinka Death Camp for the residents of the Warsaw Ghetto, stands near this building (left background).
