In this exercise, as usual, thewings seem but little exercised, the ascent being made in asort of swimming gyration; though while near the surface ofthe earth the motion of the wings in this bird is rapid andcontinuous. The Sharp-shinned is the commonest Hawk throughout NewEngland and the settled portions of Canada, and breeds southwardto the Southern States. In winter it ransfes south to MISSISSIPPI KITE. Length, 13 to i^}4 On a tree ; of small sticks, lined with moss and 2-3; bluish white; size variable, averaging X This remarkably long-winged and beautiful Hawk does notappear to extend its migrations far within the United observed it rather plentiful about and below Natchezin the summer season, sailing in easy circles, sometimes ata great elevation, so as to keep company with the TurkeyBuzzards in the most elevated regions of the air; at other timesthey were seen among the lofty forest trees, like Swallowssweeping along, and collecting the locusts {CicadcE) whichswarmed at this season.
