All the presentrecords are held by boats propelled with flash steamplants, which alone is enough to indorse their use. The average American model maker is not veryfamiliar Avith the operation and construction of flashsteam plants and the following paragraphs are devotedto the method of operation and the general features ofconstruction. The illustration. Fig. 112, shows a complete flashsteam plant and the method of connecting the variousparts. The small tank shown at A is used to hold thegasolene which is fed to the burner C. The gasolenepasses through the vaporizing coils, which are woundaround the outer surface of the burner. The nipple atthe end of the vaporizing coils has a very small aperturethrough which a fine spray of gasolene passes into thecylinder of the burner, where violent combustion takesplace, and the flame produced shoots forward into the 166 ofcQII-O. 168 3Iodel Engineering l)oiler coils, which contain the water. The gasolene burneris very simple in construction and is antomatic in its•operation after being started. The gasolene from thefuel tank, in circulating through the vaporizing coils, becomes hot and its vapor pressure is increased to suchan extent that it comes forth with considerable forcethrough the small opening in the nipple. A valve isplaced in the fuel tank to cut off or regulate the supplyof gasolene. The small opening and cap is also fitted tothe tank through which it is filled. The tank can eitherbe made of sheet brass or copper and all joints should be mWm *^^,*^ rig. 113—A gasolene blow torch for a flash-steam plant silver soldered. The vaporizing coil should either bemade of steel or copper tubing, preferably steel. Theburner is started in much the same way as the
