Having left the army, he went toAntigua, and thence to New York, for the firsttime in 1768, to arrange for a regular and constantsupply of lumber for the plantations in Antiguaand Dominica. This brought him into contactwith Gen. Schuyler, by wmom he was induced tobuy a large tract of land at Fort Miller, on theupper Hudson, including the falls, and here heerected large saw-mills. He was appointed colonelof militia, judge of the county courts, member of. the New York provincial congress, and member ofthe committee of safety. In 177-i he went again toEngland, and obtained a contract to supply the Royal navy with timber for masts and Spars, lie-was one of the committee that drafted the firstconstitution of Now York in the convention of1777. In 1777-8 he was a delegate to the Conti-nental congress, and in 1780 secretary of the treas-ury board, until the organization of the financedepartment under the National convention, Bewas a member of the state legislature, and aant secretary of the treasury under Gov. Hamil-ton. Mr. Duers failure in 1792 produced the firstfinancial panic caused by speculation that NewYork had ever witnessed. The loss was estimatedat $3,000,000, and impoverished many in allclasses.
