Spikenard stem. Light micrograph of a cross-section through the stem of a Spikenard (Aralia sp.) tree. The dark red cells just beneath the surface bark are collenchyma cells, which give support and flexibility. The cortex has a mesophyll-like tissue, within which are vascular bundles that have merged together to form a ring. Each bundle has a ring of outer bundle fibres (yellow) and a ring of the phloem with sieve tubes (pink) next to an inner ring of xylem with large vessels (yellow and red). The pith (centre) is made up of large parenchyma cells. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
