There isnot much recorded of the latter, who was promoted from the rectorship ofRatho to the Bishopric of Dunkeld, in May 1440,^ and who died in Edinburghin October of the same year. He was buried in the old kirk of Lauder, nearLauder Fort. It is far otherwise with William Lauder, his elder brother, ofwhom the ecclesiastical records take considerable note. THE LAUDERS OF BASS 169 of the Lothians, when on the death of Bishop Matthew he was promoted tothe Bishopric of Glasgow, by Pope Benedict Xlll., without the election of theChapter, who, however, did not dispute his appointment.^ Upon fourdifferent occasions he received a safe-conduct for travelling through England,on the Kings commission : twice while Archdeacon (in 1405 and 1406), and onceas Lord Chancellor in 1423 ; and also as Bishop of Glasgow in 1424, the yearbefore he died.^ From family records there seems to be no doubt of his beingthe third son of Sir Alan de Lawedre and Alicia Campbell; but Mr. CosmoInnes speaks of his parents as Robert and Annabella de Lawedre. This mayhave arisen from his State relationship to King Robert III. and AnnabellaDrummond his Queen.^ Bishop Lauder lived in the old Episcopal palace, which stood near thecathedral, a famous old building even then, for in 130
