He entered Eichmond College in 1841,where he remained four years, seeing his mother but once duringthis time, earning the money each vacation to pay his expensesthe following term. Upon his graduation, he was elected prin-cipal of St. Brides Academy. Here, from overwork amid themalaria from the adjacent Dismal Swamp, his health gave way,and ho accepted the professorship of ancient languages in Hol-lins Institute. To perfect himself asa teacher, he spent the next year in taking a special course inthe University of Virginia. He was ordained as a minister atBaltimore, in August, 1848, and came to Missouri the followingOctober, settling as pastor of the Baptist church at Lexingtonin March, 1849. His present most estimable wife was Miss Sarah E. Gilkey, towhom he was married August 28, 1849; this being his first mar-riage. He was the first president of William Jewell College, andorganized that institution January 1, 1850.
