Ever sinceCaleb Johnson in 1795 advertised that he was brewing ale, porterand table beer, for a number of decades the business of being a brewerwas a somewhat popular, but not an altogether successful one, untilThomas Morton came to Belleville from New York, and thence toNewark in 1831, and definitely established, in the big stone buildingon High Street near Orange, the Morton Brewery. To ThomasMorton, therefore, is due the credit of starting this great business inthe town that not long afterward became a city. SO HISTORIC NEWARK.
