Charleston Lake. the snow may melt completely in any winter month. Locally, the climate seems to be extremely variable, being influenced by the rugged land- scape of dry rocky ridges and swampy valleys with numerous frost pockets. Close to Lake Ontario the climate is slightly more "oceanic" because of the moderating in- fluence of the lake, the climate becoming more continental northeastward. This is shown by an increase of the temperature amplitude of the monthly means from to ° Centigrade over a distance of 50 km. The amplitude of the extremes increases over the same distance from to ° Centigrade. These values were interpolated from the maps of Putnam and Chapman (1938). The area is included within the eastern sec- tion of the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence forest region of Rowe (1959), the beech-maple forest of Knapp (1965), and the hemlock-white pine northern hardwoods region of Braun (1950)..
