The ruins show great cities of both Greece and Romans. The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, and a theater which was capable of holding 25,000 spectators. This open air theater was used for drama, but during later Roman times gladiatorial combats were also held on its stage. Ephesus was an important center for Early Christianity.
